Apple’s Latest Launch Brings Major Updates to Siri, Apple Intelligence, and iPhone
Apple announced its latest lineup of products and software updates, with new iPhones and several changes coming with iOS 27. Some of the most relevant updates for app developers and marketers came from Apple Intelligence and the new version of Siri.
Apple is bringing AI into more parts of the iPhone experience, including third-party apps. Siri can now pull information from different apps, understand more personal context, and help complete actions without requiring as much back and forth between apps. Combined with new AI features across iOS and new ways to use apps on devices like the iPhone Duo, Apple is making the overall iPhone experience much more connected.
Siri Goes Deeper Into Third-Party Apps
Apple introduced a completely new version of Siri built on its latest Apple Foundation models. According to Apple, Siri already handles around 2.5 billion requests every day, and the new version is designed to understand more complex requests and the context behind them.
One of the bigger changes is how Siri works with apps. Apple says the new Siri can work with more than 300,000 apps, including third-party apps like WhatsApp, Audible, Outlook, Notability, and Tripsie. Siri can also use personal context from places like Mail and Messages to find information related to a request.
Instead of opening several apps and searching for something manually, Siri can bring together relevant information and help complete the task. This makes third-party apps more connected to the rest of the iPhone experience rather than keeping each interaction inside a single app.
There are also more ways to access Siri. It will continue to work through voice and typing, but Apple is adding a standalone Siri app to the Home Screen. Conversations can privately sync across Apple products through iCloud, making it possible to continue a request across devices.
Apple Intelligence Moves Into More of iOS
That same approach extends beyond Siri. Apple Intelligence is being added to more of the apps and tools already used throughout iOS.
Shortcuts can now create personalized automations from a description. For example, a request could create an automation that finds information in school emails and adds relevant dates to Calendar and Reminders. The Phone app can also surface useful information automatically during a call, such as bringing up a flight confirmation code when calling an airline.
Safari is getting Notify Me, which can watch a webpage and send an alert when something changes. Image Playground is also being expanded with higher-quality image generation across a wider range of styles.
Photos received several new editing features as well. The upgraded Cleanup tool can better fill in complicated backgrounds after an object is removed. Xtend can expand an image beyond its original frame to create more space around a subject, while Spatial Reframing can change the perspective of an image after it has already been taken.
These features make the direction of Apple Intelligence clearer. Rather than keeping AI in one place, Apple is building it into tasks that already happen across iOS.
The iPhone 18 Pro Camera Gets More Advanced
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max continue that focus on more intelligent, capable experiences, particularly with the camera.
The new camera system introduces variable aperture with four options, along with manual shutter speed, white balance, and a histogram. Apple is calling these Pro Controls, bringing more traditional manual camera settings directly to the iPhone.
Smart focus tracking uses on-device AI to stay locked onto moving subjects, while Photographic Styles now offer more control over texture, grain, skin texture, and the balance between color and texture. Changes remain reversible, so the original image isn't permanently altered.
Apple also introduced Apple Reference Image, a feature focused on photo authenticity. The camera sensor signs photo data at the pixel level when an image is captured, while Private Cloud Compute creates a reference version that stays alongside the editable photo. This provides a way to compare an edited photo with what was originally captured, with potential use cases in areas like photojournalism.
iPhone Duo Changes How Apps Can Be Used
While the iPhone 18 Pro brings more capability to the traditional iPhone experience, the iPhone Duo introduces something entirely different.
Apple's first foldable iPhone has a 5.4-inch outer display that opens to a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display. Apple has kept the same aspect ratio across both screens to make moving between them feel more consistent. The inner display also includes an under-display FaceTime camera, while Touch ID is built into the side button.
More importantly for developers, parts of iOS 27 have been redesigned specifically for the Duo. The larger screen supports split-view multitasking, two Safari windows, a vertical dock, and additional side controls. Apple Pencil support is also planned for both displays later this year.
This gives apps a much different environment to work within. An app could be used on the smaller outer display, expanded onto the larger screen, or placed next to another app in split view. That makes responsive layouts and the overall experience across different screen sizes even more important.
Apps Are Becoming More Connected to the Apple Ecosystem
There was a lot of new hardware at Apple's event, but the deeper connection between Siri and third-party apps may be one of the more important changes to watch from an app growth perspective.
Apple’s latest updates also show how quickly the iPhone experience is changing. As these features roll out, developers will need to consider how apps fit into new experiences, from expanded Siri capabilities to the iPhone Duo’s new screen format.
With the new Siri starting in beta and more updates still to come, it will be worth watching how these changes take shape as they reach more users.
