Tips for Great Google Play Graphics

Tips for Great Google Play Graphics

An app’s visuals are often the first thing people notice on Google Play. An app’s screenshots and Feature Graphic quickly introduce what an app is all about and why it’s worth downloading. Google Play allows developers to get creative with aspect ratios that better highlight UI, and improve legibility of text that is otherwise lost. When designers optimize these visuals, they’ll boost an app’s visibility and attract more downloads.

Screenshot Strategy for Google Play

When designing screenshots for Google Play, it’s important to understand how the platform handles visuals differently from others. Unlike the Apple App Store, which only accepts portrait/landscape formats, Google Play offers more flexibility. Developers can utilize creative sizing for screenshots to improve legibility and enhance their app’s listing.

Screenshots also display differently across platforms. The App Store displays screenshots in search results (3 total, or a video + 2 screenshots), the Play Store does not show screenshots in search results.

Typically vertical screenshots used in the App Store are not legible on the Play Store because of the sizing. Most developers just design a single set and use them on both stores. For our clients, we often test unique sizes that allow for better continuous designs, larger text and better visibility into the app’s UI.

Feature Graphic Tips

Feature Graphics are a great way to highlight what your users are looking for, by using an in-app screengrab and calling out that feature. If the app includes a promo video, the Feature Graphic serves as the video’s thumbnail. It is prominently displayed and can occupy a large portion of the user’s screen.

To make the most of it, follow three core principles:

1. Keep it simple: Use bold visuals and minimal text. Avoid clutter so the message is instantly clear.
2. Stay consistent:Match the graphic’s design with the app’s branding. Include a call to action when possible.
3. Test and refresh:Try different designs using A/B testing. Find out what works best and update graphics regularly.

Final Thoughts

Using unique screenshot sizing and a well-designed Feature Graphic can make a big difference in how users see the app and how often it is downloaded. Simple, clear, and well-tested graphics can help the listing stand out and drive more downloads.
