Google Play Launches Game Trials: Try Paid Games Before Buying

Google Play is introducing a new feature called Game Trials, designed to make it easier for users to try paid games before purchasing them.

The feature allows players to jump into the full version of a paid game for free for a limited time. If they enjoy the experience, they can purchase the game and continue playing without losing their progress. The feature is expected to roll out first to select paid games on mobile devices and later expand to Google Play Games on PC.

A “Try Before You Buy” Approach

Game Trials give players access to the full version of a paid game during a limited trial period. Instead of downloading a separate demo or trial version, users can explore the actual game experience.

Once the trial ends, players can choose to purchase the game to keep playing. Because their progress is saved, the transition from trial to full purchase is seamless.

Why Google Is Introducing Game Trials

Paid mobile games often face a challenge that free-to-play games do not. Players may hesitate to spend money on a game without knowing whether they will enjoy it. By allowing users to try a game before buying it, Game Trials reduce that uncertainty. Players can see how a game looks, feels, and performs before making a purchase decision.

For developers, this creates a new way to showcase the full experience of their game without requiring players to commit upfront.

What This Means for Developers

Game Trials could make it easier for premium games to reach new players. Instead of relying on screenshots, trailers, or reviews, developers can let users experience the gameplay directly. For developers building paid games, this may help increase trust and reduce hesitation around purchasing. At the same time, it gives developers a new way to highlight the quality of their games within the Play Store. As the feature rolls out more broadly, Game Trials could become an important tool for helping players discover and evaluate premium titles.
